Previous hand-held learning devices and solutions have had major problems in obtaining software applications for the specific device or incuring the additional cost of purchasing Windows application licenses for say Microsoft Office.  The NOKIA handheld and mobile device community is (as you would expect) growing daily and the number of users worldwide is many hundreds of million.  This has meant that the open source community already has a vast array of free applications that can be installed to your N810 (and N800) free of charge.  Some of the most educationally-friendly applications are shown below and ALL of them can be downloaded from the SUPPORT section for our valued CHOOSE TO LEARN contract holders.

SANAKO do not create any software applications other than the SANAKO Mobile Client - the following list is provided for information purposes only.  Should you have any questions about these applications then you will need to contact the creators directly via the open source community - you can do this via www.maemo.org

The Maemo community is an active one and people who create free applications for the devices make these available via a set of download repositories.  This means that you can select which applications you want to install from their library and keep notified of updates in the future.  One excellent reference page for these repositories is shown below - the Gronmayer web page.

Personal Menu

A very useful application that allows you to create a bespoke menu from which you can launch all your favourite applications.  It removes the need to navigate through the various menus and hence saves time and helps focus student learning.








AbiWord - Word Processor

This application will allow you to open and edit saved .DOC files from Microsoft WORD.  It provides all the usual editing facilities that you could want such as bold, fonts, colours, tables, headers, footers etc...








Google Docs

Although this is not actually an application that you have to download, Google Docs is an online service that allows you to edit WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT files that have been saved to your googlemail account.








Tux Paint

Younger students will simply love this application with its very intuitive interface.  The range of drawing tools and effects is large and the accompanying sounds that play bring an extra dimension of fun to learning.








HP Scientific Calculator

A fully functional scientific calculator !!!!  Why bother carrying another device around with you anymore?











Gnumeric Spreadsheet
 
Allows you open Microsoft EXCEL worksheets, edit them and save your changes.  You can also create new spreadsheets and save them in various formats including XLS and CSV.








Denemo Music Editor

Create you own music and play them back.  Edit saved music scores, save and print them.











Periodic Table

Mind-mapping

 
An increasingly popular method for students to plan their coursework, essays, projects and revision is via the use of Mind-mapping techniques.  This application provides an easy to use interface and all work can be saved or exported.

 





Maemo Voice Recorder

Can be used together with the headset attachment to record your voice and/or interviews with other people - useful for field trips?!  Audio files can be saved as WAV and exported.










MaemoPad+

A sketching tool that allows you to make a set of notes for particular projects or subjects.  It can be very useful for group work.

   

 



 

 

 




GPS Camera

FB Reader

Download and read e-books from free web sources or from the publisher pay sites.  The following eBook formats are supported - .txt, .html, .rtf, .chm and plucker. 

If you want a PDF reader then you can use the eVince software option.

A simple mathematical function calculator and plotter software. Ideal for secondary level students.
